We (myself and friend) took the train to Colchester for this exploration of Essex by river and coast. The map of our ride is here.
We followed the path beside the River Colne out past Essex University, along the Wivenhoe waterfront, then through more rural surroundings to Brightlingsea. Here we took the passenger ferry across the creek to Point Clear, and took the road inland via St Osyth to reach the path along the sea front, passing in front of Jaywick (an eye-opener: a prefab town, and one of the poorest communities in England apparently), Clacton-on-Sea and the retirement town of Frinton-on-Sea. We did a circuit of Walton-on-the-Naze before getting the train back from Frinton station. Despite the rather dull weather, this was a very interesting and varied ride.
