We rolled up the Wye Valley and soon crossed the river to return to England after our brief stay in Wales. I don't know why, but I assumed our route through the Forest of Dean would be a doddle. But it actually proved to be one of our biggest single climbs so far to reach it, and the B road we took through the Forest had many ups and downs. What with the climbs, the gloomy, humid weather and the fast, busy road, I probably didn't do the forest credit. Anyway, when we emerged from the gloom after the final lung-burster at Stockwell Green we were greeted with welcome far reaching views over the Severn Valley, to which we descended rapidly to Westbury-on-Severn.

The country lanes between Westbury and Upton-upon-Severn, passing through classic English farmland, were a joy, and flattish to boot. I had set myself a challenge to get to Worcester in time to go up the Cathedral tower. Hence I put on a spurt along the final 10 miles or so, and just got there in time.

Our B&Bs were a few miles further on at Fernhill.
