Adur Ferry Bridge: new pedestrian and cycle crossing

Made bike trip down the Downs Link today, my first on this route in 2014. Notable for my first use of the new Adur Ferry Bridge over the Adur at Shoreham. It links Shoreham town to Shoreham Beach, providing a link to the NCN2 heading west to Worthing. I find this a relatively quiet alternative to the mayhem along the sea front when you head east to Brighton. The bridge is a great improvement over the old structure: bright new design, good width, and providing excellent views over the river estuary: a tribute to the hard work by Sustrans and the local council. Only snag is that they have used glass panels in place of railings, and assumed that everyone using it is a law abiding citizen, as opposed to mindless anti-social vandals. Result: several of the panels have been smashed, necessitating the installation of CCTV.

  1. Unfortunately these panels are still occasionally breaking and it has been suggested it is a design flaw as the bridge moves with wind and temp changes!
